Eligibility / Prerequisites:

  • Comfortable using a computer & internet.
  • Basic knowledge of how websites work (domain, hosting, browser).
  • Familiarity with Shopify dashboard (products, collections, settings) is helpful.
  • Basic understanding of HTML, CSS & Liquid (Shopify’s templating language).
  • Willingness to explore Shopify themes, apps, and customizations.
  • Problem-solving mindset for troubleshooting store design or layout issues.

Week-by-Week Course Plan

Week 1: Foundations & Design Planning

Goal: Setup Shopify environment, learn design fundamentals, and create layout prototypes

  • Day 1: Shopify Basics + HTML/CSS Foundations
  • Shopify admin dashboard tour
  • Theme Editor interface (sections, blocks, settings)
  • Live preview customization
  • HTML structure essentials (tags, classes, IDs)
  • CSS fundamentals (selectors, box model, flexbox)
  • Tools: Shopify Free Trial, Dawn Theme, VS Code
  • Day 2: Figma to Shopify Theme Development
  • Figma interface tour (frames, components, auto-layout)
  • Convert Figma layouts to HTML/CSS
  • Theme file structure (layout, templates, sections)
  • Liquid syntax basics (objects, filters)
  • Tools: Figma, VS Code

Mini-Assignment:

Create homepage mockup in Figma

Week 2: Theme Structure & Customization

Goal:Master theme architecture and visual customization

  • Day 1: JSON Templates & Liquid Templating
  • Section schema controls
  • Presets and input settings
  • Dynamic content sources
  • Advanced logic (loops, conditionals)
  • Global objects (products, collections)
  • Custom section creation
  • Tools: Dawn theme files
  • Day 2: CSS Deep Dive & Theme Styling
  • Theme stylesheet customization
  • CSS variables for branding
  • Responsive design techniques
  • Debugging with Chrome DevTools
  • Best practices for maintainable CSS

Mini-Assignment:

Build testimonial section

Week 3: Advanced Functionality

Goal: Implement custom content and integrations

  • Day 1: Metafields & Dynamic Content
  • Native metafield setup
  • Display custom data on product pages
  • Dynamic product tabs
  • Tools: Metafields Guru
  • Day 2: App Integration Strategies
  • Essential apps (Loox, Growave)
  • App embedding vs. code injection
  • Performance optimization

Mini-Assignment:

 Add size chart metafield

Week 4: Optimization & Launch

Goal: Finalize and deploy production-ready themes

  • Day 1: Performance Optimization & Debugging
  • Image optimization techniques
  • CSS/JS minification
  • Lazy loading implementation
  • Cross-browser/device testing
  • Liquid debugging techniques
  • Tools: Lighthouse, Shopify CDN, BrowserStack
  • Day 2: Version Control, Deployment & Maintenance
  • Theme version control (GitHub / Shopify CLI)
  • Theme publishing workflow
  • Backup strategies
  • Ongoing maintenance checklist

Final Assignment:

 Customized theme with style guide

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, students will:

  • Design layouts using Figma → HTML/CSS
  • Customize themes via JSON/Liquid
  • Implement metafields without apps
  • Optimize themes for performance (90+ Lighthouse)
  • Manage production deployment
