WordPress Bootcamp: From HTML Basics to Custom Themes & Elementor

From Fundamentals to a Full WordPress Website.

Eligibility / Prerequisites:

  • Comfortable using a computer & internet.
  • Basic knowledge of how websites work (domain, hosting, browser).
  • Basic HTML & CSS understanding (very helpful).
  • Willingness to explore WordPress dashboard (pages, posts, themes, plugins).
  • Problem-solving mindset for troubleshooting plugins/themes.

Week-by-Week Course Plan

Week 1: HTML, CSS & WordPress Introduction

Goal: Learn basic front-end web development and install WordPress locally.

  • What is WordPress (CMS, use cases)
  • Introduction to HTML: structure, tags, elements, attributes
  • Building a simple webpage (header, main, footer)
  • Intro to CSS: selectors, properties, box model
  • Flexbox & Grid layout basics
  • Linking CSS with HTML
  • Installing LocalWP or XAMPP
  • Downloading & setting up WordPress
  • Understanding WordPress folder/files
  • Exploring the WP Admin Dashboard

Mini-Assignment:

Create a basic HTML & CSS homepage layout and install WordPress locally.

Week 2: WordPress Themes & Customization

Goal: Understand the WordPress theme system and customize using built-in tools.

  • What are WordPress themes? Free vs Premium
  • Installing and customizing themes
  • Exploring Widgets, Menus, and the Customizer
  • Overview: style.css, index.php, header.php, footer.php
  • The WordPress Loop: while(have_posts())
  • Intro to PHP basics used in WP
  • Creating and activating a child theme
  • Modifying header.php and footer.php
  • Adding custom menu and widget areas

Mini-Assignment:

Customize a free theme and create a basic child theme with modified header and footer.

Week 3: Custom Themes & Plugins

Goal: Develop a basic custom theme and explore essential plugins.

  • Folder structure and required files
  • Enqueuing styles and scripts properly
  • Understanding template hierarchy
  • Creating custom page.php, single.php, and archive.php
  • Adding featured image support, dynamic menus, and widgets
  • What are plugins? Installing and configuring
  • Must-have plugins: Contact Form 7, SEO (Yoast/RankMath), Security, Backup
  • Basics of plugin compatibility and management

Mini-Assignment:

Create a custom WP theme with 2-3 templates and install at least 3 plugins.

Week 4: Elementor & Advanced Features

Goal: Learn visual page building with Elementor and explore advanced WP features.

  • Installing and using Elementor
  • Building a modern landing page
  • Elementor vs Custom Theme: Pros & Cons
  • Creating custom post types
  • Intro to ACF (Advanced Custom Fields)
  • Building custom layouts with ACF data
  • (Optional) Setting up WooCommerce
  • Styling your site for responsiveness
  • Exporting and presenting your website project

Final Assignment:

Build a 3+ page website (Home, About, Contact) using either Elementor or a custom theme, with forms, custom fields, and basic SEO setup.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, students will:

  • Understand how websites are structured using HTML, CSS, and WordPress
  • Install and configure WordPress in a local environment
  • Customize themes using templates, PHP, and child themes
  • Build a custom WordPress theme from scratch
  • Use page builders like Elementor to build responsive pages
  • Integrate essential plugins and basic custom fields
  • Create and present a complete WordPress website

Note: A laptop is mandatory for this course.
